It was time to do another dragon but this time in the vein of my Leone di San Marco, which is a winged lion. I liked the majesty of the lion's step. This image was taken at the end of the first day of carving a blank plaster block, which is the way I've been doing it the last several years. Before I would mold a piece in clay to a certain approximate shape, make a temporary rubber mold, and cast that in plaster in order to begin carving again. But for plaques, as opposed to deeper three dimensional pieces "in the round" the current method is more precise and uses less rubber, which is by far the most expensive component of all the materials I use.
