Basically done in one day. The freedom that not following a line drawing gives me is not only liberating and just plain fun, but twice it has surprised me at the speed at which these models have been completed. I am on the lookout for an ever more ambitious subject and size.
Cast Stone processed with Peridot and other metallics over black and Burgundy.
This came from nowhere. Not even a drawing to begin with except for the outline of the dragon. Everything else was ad lib...and liberating at that for that reason. A first. And quick.
Couple of different finishes.
And it's an ambitious one...enough to make me nervous. Named Altered Meditation.
End of day 1.
Finished model 1/24
First cast 1/27; finish AC 11 9 3+19
Always in search of something detailed, something intricate I happened upon this, the Thread of Life. One thing I've been conscious of is the lack of much empty space which I find to be desirable when it feels "balanced" by the areas of intricacy. This is really (despite its being circular) a six "sided" figure, that is its symmetry is based on six identical patterns surrounding the same central pattern. So there are six naturally occurring "spaces" around the circumference of the central figure. My point is I am conscious that these space areas need to be accentuated, as well as any other space areas I can make by minimizing the thread and enlarging the space between the thread.
Here is the initial drawing on plaster begun on 1-6-10. It may be completed today.
Completed model 1/12/2010
First cast and processed bronze over metallic rose over black.
The fractal logarithmic spiral is key
To the space in my heart,
Mirrored, imaged endlessly.
My love is self-reflective in tranquility,
Disappearing only in infinity!
Stage 1, after a day of drawing and carving. The logarithmic spiral fractal.
A logarithmic spiral, equiangular spiral or growth spiral is a special kind of spiral curve which often appears in nature. The logarithmic spiral was first described by Descartes and later extensively investigated by Jacob Bernoulli, who called it Spira mirabilis, "the marvelous spiral".
This heart is formed by iterations and variations of the spiral.
End of day 2
Completed model. Molded on 1/5/2010 and poured today 1/6
First cast. Finish is (secret code here) A+D 10 9 6 meaning Bronze over Metallic Peridot over Rose over black + Burgundy. And meaning reproducible.
And a A+D 20 10 9, which is Peridot over Metallic Rose over bronze on a background of black and burgundy. Posted 1/20/2011
